About the Film
Six years in the making, WHEN WE FREE THE WORLD is a powerful and honest documentary film about manhood in America, through the lens and lives of 70 Black male voices across 5 generations, from teenagers to 90-somethings. The film explores manhood, fatherhood, history, education, violence in all forms, healing, hip-hop, mental health, and hope. Directed by Kevin Powell, and co-produced and co-written with his wife Evangeline Lawson, WHEN WE FREE THE WORLD asks and answers the age-old question, What is a man? Immediately after the virtual screening Evangeline and Kevin will engage in a question-and-answer session with the audience/community, including about their creative process and decisions, what they learned from making the film, and what they believe the film represents for any conversations around manhood in these times.
