The Film
Desire Lines is a hybrid feature film that blends personal interviews, archival materials, and narrative fiction to explore the complicated and often unwritten history of transmasculine sexuality. It follows Ahmad, an Iranian expat now in his 60s, who, after decades of concealing his trans identity, visits the LGBTQ archives in Chicago to reconcile with his latent homosexuality and engage with his identity as a gay trans man.
Assisted by Kieran, a young nonbinary archivist, they form an intergenerational friendship, bonded by their connection to Lou Sullivan, a gay transgender AIDS activist. Ahmad's journey includes fantasy sequences that reimagine the experiences in gay bathhouses of the 70s and 80s, ultimately leading him to feel desired for who he is.
The film also features intimate interviews with trans men about their experiences with gay male cruising culture and the challenges of navigating gender and sexuality. Using letters from Lou Sullivan and clips from his final interviews, Desire Lines serves as a tender love letter to the gay transmasculine community and the legacy that Lou Sullivan, and many unnamed others like him, left behind.
