Multi-hyphenate, multidisciplinary artist Saul Williams brings his unique dynamism to this Afrofuturist vision, a sci-fi punk musical that’s a visually wondrous amalgamation of themes, ideas, and songs that Williams has explored in his work, notably his 2016 album MartyrLoserKing. Co-directed with the Rwandan-born artist and cinematographer Anisia Uzeyman, the film takes place in the hilltops of Burundi, where a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective. From their camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump, they attempt a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region's natural resources – and its people. When an intersex runaway and an escaped coltan miner find each other through cosmic forces, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry. Set between states of being – past and present, dream and waking life, colonized and free, male and female, memory and prescience – Neptune Frost is an invigorating and empowering direct download to the cerebral cortex and a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends.

This online event will take place on April 23 at 11am Pacific / 2pm East Coast / 8pm Central Europe and Rwanda. The event will last approximately 2.5 hours.
This event will feature a screening of the award-winning film Neptune Frostfollowed by a discussion and Q&A with the Paper Crown Rwanda (PCR) team and some of the artists behind the film.
The award-winning film Neptune Frost was filmed in Rwanda co-directors Anisia Uzeyman and Saul Williams. It is a mesmerizing Afrofuturist musical that explores gender, capitalism, technology, and more. Follow the protagonists - an intersex African hacker and a coltan miner - to see the virtual marvel born as the result of their union.
All proceeds from ticket sales will go towards Paper Crown's project "Empower Rwandan Women to Become Community Educators" that will fund 5 women to join the PCR team as champions of change and help them scale their transformative gender work across Rwanda, a region where violence against girls and women is on the rise. Through this project, PCR will be able to transform harmful gender norms and support girls and boys to be advocates for social justice.
